Temple History

Baba Baidyanath Temple, also known as Baidyanath Dham, is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and is located in Deoghar, Jharkhand. The temple is also one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, where it is believed that the heart of Sati fell. According to Hindu mythology, Ravana worshipped Lord Shiva here and was blessed with the Atmalinga. The temple complex consists of 22 temples, with the main temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The Shivling at Baidyanath is believed to be self-manifested (Swayambhu) and is one of the most sacred abodes of Lord Shiva.

During the month of Shravan (July-August), thousands of devotees carry holy water from the Ganges in Sultanganj to offer it to the Jyotirlinga at Baidyanath Dham, covering a distance of about 100 kilometers on foot. This ritual is known as Kanwar Yatra.
