Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, India
Mahakaleshwar Temple, situated in the ancient city of Ujjain, is one of the most significant among the twelve Jyotirlingas. The presiding deity, Mahakaleshwar, is believed to be Swayambhu (self-manifested) and is the only Jyotirlinga that faces south. The temple in its present form was built by the Scindias in 1736 CE, though its origins date back to the 6th century BCE. The distinctive feature of this temple is its unique positioning - the lingam is positioned below ground level. According to legend, the lingam is believed to be Dakshinamukhi (facing south), which is a unique characteristic as most Shiva temples have the lingam facing east. The temple has survived multiple invasions and destructions, including those by Sultan Iltutmish in 1234-35 CE, and stands as a testament to the resilience of Indian spiritual heritage.
