Temple History

Nageshwar Temple, also known as Nagnath Temple, is one of the 12 sacred Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. Located between Gomti Dwarka and Bet Dwarka in Gujarat, this temple is mentioned in the Shiva Purana. According to legend, a demon named Daruka imprisoned a devout Shiva follower named Supriya. Through her devotion to Lord Shiva and chanting of the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra, Lord Shiva appeared and defeated the demon, establishing the Jyotirlinga at this site. The temple houses one of the largest Shiva statues (25m) in the world. The Jyotirlinga here is believed to protect devotees from all poisons (visa) and is therefore also known as Nageshwar (Lord of Snakes).
