Omkareshwar, Madhya Pradesh, India
Omkareshwar Temple is one of the 12 revered Jyotirlinga shrines of Lord Shiva. Situated on an island called Mandhata or Shivapuri in the Narmada river, the island's shape resembles the sacred Hindu symbol 'ॐ' (Om). This makes it one of the most spiritually significant places in India. The temple consists of two ancient shrines: Omkareshwar (where the main Jyotirlinga is housed) and Amareshwar. According to the Shiv Purana, when the Vindhya mountain prayed to Lord Shiva and Parvati for their blessings, Lord Shiva blessed him by taking the form of Omkareshwar (Lord of Om or Pranav) and residing on this island. The temple architecture is a magnificent blend of North and South Indian architectural styles, featuring intricate carvings and sculptural work.
